The Sonnets

The Sonnets have proved to be a treasure trove to literary faddists, and one who is lavish of time and patience to follow them in their wanderings can but realize how limited is human endeavour in speculative fields. Books galore have been written to discover the identity of “W. H.” to whom the Sonnets were dedicated, as though this were matter of grave importance. One writer discerns behind the mysterious letters, which he reverses, Henry Wriothesley; others, William Harvey, William Hart, William Herbert, William Hathaway, and William Hughes. Mary Fitton, one of the actor’s supposed mistresses, has also played an unsavoury role in the discussion.
