Three Years

1576 to 1579 are among the most important in Francis Bacon's life. They directed the bent of his mind into certain definite channels. They revealed how his idealism could be brought from the clouds to become embodied in the stren realities of life. They moulded certain lines of action that went far to satisfy the hunger of the "Spirit of Philanthropia" - to spend and be spent in the service of man - that had even then begun to burn within his breast like a consuming flame.

The French Court was as licentious, however, as it was brilliantly intellectual. Marguerite de Valois had been married to King Henry of Navarre for resons of State. When Francis Bacon arrived, a divorce was being arranged at her instigation. She was in the prime of young womanhood, in the hey-day of youth, aged 25, when Bacon first became acquainted with her, under the most congenial surroundings.
